Cartier's Tank Française debuted in 1996, decades after Louis Cartier created the original Tank watch in 1917. Though many years had passed, the integral elements of the iconic design remained the same - note the distinctive square shape, Roman numerals that hide the Cartier signature and thick sides supposedly inspired by a tank's tread, for example. The Française edition - here rendered in yellow gold - saw a contemporary update in the form of an integrated chain-link bracelet, bringing unity to the timepiece and proving a popular reinterpretation that has remained so ever since.
